In an effort to rebuild the country’s struggling economy, the Brazilian government introduces a controversial and permanent policy that requires strict vertical isolation for elderly citizens over the age of eighty. Under this system, seniors must leave their homes and communities to live in specially created colonies, separated from the rest of society. The policy is presented as a necessary measure for economic recovery, but it deeply affects families and communities across the country. Teca, a determined 77 year old woman living in the quiet village of Muriti in the Amazon region, believes she still has a few years before the rule could ever apply to her. However, her world suddenly changes when the government announces that the age limit has been lowered, meaning that people her age will now also be forced into isolation. Realizing that her freedom may soon disappear, Teca refuses to accept her fate without a fight. Secretly and cautiously, she begins a risky journey through rivers, small boats, and hidden paths of the Amazon, carefully avoiding government officers searching for those who must be relocated. Along the way she encounters unexpected allies and dangers as she travels through the region’s shadowy underworld. Her goal is simple yet deeply personal: before losing her independence forever, she wants to fulfill a lifelong dream she has never experienced, to ride on an airplane at least once.
