A shy and insecure Chinese American teenager struggles to fit in at her high school, where popularity and appearance seem to matter more than anything else. Feeling ignored by her classmates and constantly pressured to meet unrealistic beauty standards, she becomes convinced that changing the way she looks is the only way to finally be accepted. Desperate to win the title of prom queen and gain the attention and admiration she has always wanted, she agrees to undergo a risky experimental surgery designed to make her appear white. At first, the transformation seems to give her everything she dreamed of, including popularity, confidence, and social acceptance. However, as she becomes more deeply involved in her new identity, she begins to lose touch with who she truly is and the culture she once tried to hide.
