Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi epic has opened with the biggest Amazon MGM debut ever and the strongest MPA movie launch of 2026 so far.
Amazon MGM’s Project Hail Mary, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted by Drew Goddard from Andy Weir’s novel, opened to about $80.5 million in North America and $60.4 million internationally, reaching roughly $140.9 million worldwide in its first frame. Box Office Mojo lists the worldwide total at $140,983,746, with Amazon MGM as the domestic distributor.
The rollout began internationally before the U.S. break, with Box Office Mojo listing the earliest commercial release on March 12, 2026, in Italy, followed by the domestic launch on March 20, 2026. The Motion Picture Association also describes the opening as Amazon MGM’s biggest ever and the best start for any film this year.
Industry-wise, the result matters because it gives Amazon MGM a major theatrical win on a reported full 2026 slate, while premium-format demand helped fuel the opening. AP reports that the film sold about 5 million tickets in North America and that audience recommendation scores were strong, pointing to possible sustained global play in coming weeks
